ANGELENO HEIGHTS AND CROWN HILL LINE (1910-1920)

 

Formed from the merging of the Angeleno Heights and Crown Hill Lines of the Los Angeles Inter-Urban (Pacific Electric local line.)

 

ROUTE:  From Kensington Road and Douglas Street, south on Douglas to Edgeware Road.  South on Edgeware to Bellevue Avenue, east on Bellevue to Alpine Avenue, east on Alpine to N. Figueroa Street.  South on Figueroa to Boston Street, east on Boston to Bunker Hill Avenue, south on Bunker Hill to California Street.  East on California to Broadway, south on Broadway to W. 1st Street, west on 1st to Hill Street, south on Hill to W. 5th Street.  West on 5th to Olive Street, south on Olive to W. 6th Street, west on 6th to Flower Street, north on Flower to W. 3rd Street.  West on 3rd and Miramar Streets to Boyleston Avenue, south on Boyleston to Arnold Avenue, west on Arnold to Columbia Street.  North on Columbia to Silver Street, west on Silver to Loma Drive north on Loma and Belmont Avenue to Temple Street, east on Temple to Echo Park Avenue, north on Echo Park to Bellevue Avenue, east on Bellevue to E. Edgeware Road.

 

JUNE 2, 1915:  Due to rebuilding the entrance of Broadway Tunnel, line on California Street cut back to Hill Street, then south on Hill to Temple Street, east on Temple to Broadway, where it rejoined original routing.

 

MAY 9, 1920:  Line renamed the ‘C’-Crown Hill and Angeleno Heights Line.

‘C’-CROWN HILL AND ANGELENO HEIGHTS LINE (1920-1924)

 

Formed by taking over the Angeleno Heights and Crown Hill Line with no change of route.

 

ROUTE:  From Kensington Road and Douglas Avenue, south on Douglas to E. Edgeware Road, south on Edgeware to Bellevue Avenue, east on Bellevue to Alpine Street.  East on Alpine to N. Figueroa Street, south on Figueroa to Boston Street, east on Boston to Bunker Hill Avenue.  South on Bunker Hill to California Street, east on California to Hill Street, south on Hill to Temple Street, east on Temple to Broadway, south on Broadway to W. 1st Street.  West on 1st to Hill Street, south on Hill to W. 5th Street, west on 5th to Olive Street, south on Olive to W. 6th Street, west on 6th to Flower Street, north on Flower to W. 3rd Street, west on 3rd and Miramar Streets to Boylston Avenue.  South on Boylston to Arnold Street, west on Arnold to Columbia Avenue, north on Columbia to Silver Street, west on Silver to Loma Drive, north on Loma and Belmont Avenue to Temple Street.  East on Temple to Echo Park Road, north on Echo Park to Bellevue Avenue, east on Bellevue to E. AUGUST 5, 1920:  Cut back to Temple and Belmont Avenue, trackage abandoned on Echo Park Drive from Temple Street to Bellevue Avenue and on Bellevue to E. Edgeware Road, with no replacement.

 

NOVEMBER 18, 1923:  Extended west on Temple Street from Belmont Avenue to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Clinton Street, west on Clinton to Virgil Avenue, north on Virgil to Fountain Avenue, west on Fountain to Edgemont Street, taking over the western portion of the ‘T’-Temple Street Line.

 

JULY 4, 1924:  Rerouted and renamed the ‘C’-Crown Hill and Temple Street Line.

 

‘C’-CROWN HILL AND TEMPLE STREET LINE (1924-1932)

 

Formed from the Crown Hill branch of the ‘C’-Crown Hill and Angeleno heights Line and the ‘T’-Temple Street Line, taking over the remaining portion of the ‘T’-Temple Street Line.

 

ROUTE:  From Belmont Avenue and Temple Street, east on Temple to Broadway, south on W. 1st Street, west on 1st to Hill Street, south on Hill to W. 5th Street.  West on 5th to Olive Street, south on Olive to W. 6th Street, west on 6th to Fountain Street, north on Fountain to W. 3rd Street, west on 3rd, Boylston.  Arnold to Columbia, north on Columbia, Silver, Loma, and Belmont to Temple, west on Temple to Hoover, north on Hoover, Clinton and Virgil to Fountain, west on Fountain to Edgemont Street.  The Angeleno Heights and Kensington Road branch became the ‘AH’-Shuttle from Temple and Main to Kensington and Douglas Avenue.

 

JULY 19, 1925:  Line on W. 5th extended west from Olive Street on new trackage from Olive to Flower Street, eliminating the jog down to W. 6th and back.

 

OCTOBER 19, 1927:  Edgeware Road branch from Temple and Edgeware to Kensington and Douglas taken over from the ‘G’-Line (which had taken over the ‘AH’-Shuttle), giving the line alternate terminals (Temple and Belmont and Kensington and Douglas.)

 

SEPTEMBER 1931:  Due to rebuilding of the line in the Crown Hill area, service west of W. 3rd and Flower Street was replaced with motor coaches, as was the Kensington branch.  The line was then temporarily rerouted from W. 3rd and Flower, south on Flower Street to W. 5th Street.  East on 5th to Hill Street, north on Hill to W. 1st, east on 1st to Broadway, north on Broadway to Temple Street.  West on Temple to Hoover Street, north on Hoover to Clinton Avenue, west on Clinton to Virgil Avenue, north on Virgil to Fountain Avenue and west on Fountain to Edgemont Street.

 

MAY 8, 1932:  Normal service resumed, except the Kensington branch became the ‘32’-Edgeware Shuttle, all service now from Temple and Belmont Avenue.

 

JUNE 12, 1932:  ‘C’-Line split between two new lines.  The ‘2’-Griffith Avenue and Crown Hill Line including trackage from Temple and Belmont via Belmont, W. 3rd, Flower, W. 5th Hill Broadway, Pasadena to Griffin and Montecito Avenues.  The portion on Temple and Hoover to Fountain and Edgemont Street, was made part of the ‘L’-West 11th and West Temple Street Line.
