SANTA FE AVENUE LINE (1910-1920)

 

Formed from the Los Angeles Railway Company’s line of same name and route.

 

ROUTE:  From W. 7th Street and Broadway, east on 7th to Mateo Street, south on Mateo to E. 9th Street, east on 9th to Santa Fe Avenue, south on Santa Fe to Vernon Avenue, where the line split.  One branch went further south on Santa Fe Avenue to Slauson Avenue, the other went east at the junction of Vernon Avenue and Pacific Boulevard, heading east, then south on Pacific to Saturn Avenue.

 

1918:  Line on Pacific Boulevard transferred to the Griffith and Griffin Line.

 

MAY 9, 1920:  Made part of the new ‘J’-West Jefferson and Huntington Park Line.  Service on Pacific Boulevard restored to this line.

JEFFERSON AND NORTH MAIN STREET LINE (1911-1918)

 

Formed from the Jefferson Avenue branch of the Los Angeles Traction’s University Line and the Los Angeles Railway Main Street Line east of Wesley (University) Avenue; service began in 1911.

 

ROUTE:  From Jefferson Avenue and Arlington Avenue, east on Jefferson to Main Street, north on S. Main, Spring, N. Main to Mission Road, east on Mission to Selig Place.

 

1918:  Rerouted on north end, going only as far as Sunset Boulevard on N. Main, west on Sunset to N. Spring Street, north on Spring to College Street.  Service on N. Main north of Sunset was taken over by the Main Street branch of the Grand Avenue and North Broadway Line.

 

MAY 5, 1920:  Made part of the ‘J’-Line.

WEST JEFFERSON LINE (1918-1920)

 

Formed from the southern section (south of Sunset Boulevard) of the Jefferson and North Main Street Line.

 

ROUTE:  From 9th and W. Jefferson Avenues, east on Jefferson to S. Main Street, north on Main to Sunset Boulevard, west on Sunset (very short block) to N. Spring Street, north to Ord Street.  Tracks north on Main from Sunset were made part of the Grand Avenue and North Broadway Line (Main Street branch.)

 

MAY 9, 1920:  Jefferson Avenue portion became part of the ‘J’-Line, while the portion on Main Street became part of the ‘M’ -Line.

‘J’-WEST JEFFERSON AND HUNTINGTON PARK LINE (1920-1963)

 

Formed from the West Jefferson Street Line, the Santa Fe Avenue Line, and the Pacific Boulevard branch of the Griffith and Griffin Line.  Service starts May 9, 1920.

 

ROUTE:  From 9th and W. Jefferson Avenues, east on Jefferson to Grand Avenue, north on Grand to W. 7th Street, east on 7th to Mateo Street, south on Mateo to E. 9th Street, east on 9th to Santa Fe Avenue, south on Santa Fe to Vernon Avenue, where it split.  One branch continued south on Santa Fe to Slauson Avenue, the other went east onto Pacific Boulevard, east and south on Pacific to Florence Avenue, east on Florence to Seville Street, south on Seville to Santa Ana Street in Huntington Park.

 

DECEMBER 21, 1923:  Santa Fe Avenue south from Vernon to Florence Avenues transferred to the ‘V’-Vernon-Vermont Line.

 

MARCH 10, 1933:  Due to damage caused by the Long Beach earthquake, line was cut back, first to Seville and 9th Streets, then to Florence Avenue and Pacific Boulevard in Huntington Park.

 

MARCH 28, 1933:  Service returned to normal.

 

JANUARY 8, 1939:  Extended west from Jefferson and 9th Avenues to a new loop at 10th Avenue.

 

FEBRUARY 9, 1939:  Extended south from Santa Fe and Seville Streets to a new loop at Palm Place in Huntington Park.

 

SEPTEMBER 1962:  Due to storm drain construction along Santa Fe Avenue, southeast section rerouted from E. 7th Street and San Pedro Avenue, south on ‘S’-Line trackage on San Pedro Avenue to Vernon Avenue, east on Vernon on ‘V’-Line trackage to Pacific Boulevard, then via its normal route to Palm Place loop.

 

MARCH 29, 1963:  Rail service abandoned (service was never returned to the line’s regular route.)
